Abstract:Introduction: With the application of the model ‘Theory of Planned Behavior’ is tried to explain why people work as a firefighter volunteer and voluntary take risks. The construct attitude of the model is linked to the concept sensation seeking and the construct perceived behavioral control of the model is linked to the concept self-efficacy. The hypothesis of this research is: ‘Working as firefighter volunteer can be explained by a higher degree of sensation seeking and a higher degree of self-efficacy on firefighter tasks’. Method: Using questionnaires, the constructs of the model ‘Theory of Planned Behavior’ are measured at a group of firefighter volunteers and a group that does not as a firefighter volunteer. A total of 58 firefighter volunteers and 65 non-firefighters completed the questionnaire. The questionnaire includes a self-designed scale, the Firefighters Self-Efficacy Scale (FSES), that is specifically aimed at the self-efficacy on firefighter related tasks. Results: The analysis of the data shows that firefighter volunteers have a higher degree of sensation seeking and a higher degree of self-efficacy. In contrast to self-efficacy, sensation seeking has according to the ‘Theory of Planned Behavior’ no explanatory influence on the behavior working as a firefighter volunteer. Discussion: Results of the study have provided more insight into a few factors that may explain the behavior working as a firefighter volunteer and taking voluntary risks. This knowledge can be used for the recruitment of new firefighter volunteers and for de encouraging of firefighter volunteers to continue working as a firefighter volunteer.
