Abstract:Objectives: People with polyathritis have to face physical and psychological limitations. Physical limitations come along with pain and fatigue. Depression and anxiety can be psychological limitations which patients with polyathritis may experience. Positive effects are positve emotions which the patients might experience. The literature mostly suggests that the positive and negative well-being is related to the patient's physical functioning. Furthermore researchers claim that pain and fatigue affect this mechanism. In this study it has been examined whether the positive and negative well-being can predict the change in physical function over a period of one year. In addition it was found out which role pain and fatigue play in that regard. Methods: 331 persons (39% men, average age 62 years) with a form of polyarthritis have taken part in this study. To obtain the data, questionnaires filled out over a period of one year. The research question is answered by a hierarchial multivariate regression analysis with three blocks to investigate the longitudinal coherence between the positive and negative well-being and the change in physical functioning. Results: The positive and negative well-being can not predict the change in physical functioning over a period of one year. Gender is a significant predictor for the change in physical functioning. Conclusion: Depression, anxiety and positive effect are no good predictors for the change in physical functioning. The factor gender at baseline can partly predict the change of the physical functioning over a period of one year. In future research the one-year period may be extended and the change in the well-being may be examined in relation to the change of physical functioning.
