Abstract:Purpose. The growing interest in spirituality in the society has the effect that social workers need to be appropriate trained to fulfill their patients’ needs. The present study was designed to examine which traits the students who have chosen for the minor Spirit have and which motivation they had to choose for it. The aim was to find the main reasons for students to deal with spirituality and to define what kind of students are willing to do so. Methods. This study consists of a quantitative and a qualitative part. The quantitative part consists of three questionnaires: a questionnaire to find out the demographic data, the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) to identify the BIG 5 personality traits and the Growth Motivation Index (GMI) to identify the student’s motivation to grow within their personality. To have a comparison, a second group of students from the minor Geestelijke Gezondheid (mental health) was also tested. The study was performed among 37 students from the minor Spirit and 14 students from the second group. For the qualitative part three students were interviewed with the aim to find out their personal motivations for their choice. Results. There were no significant differences found within the demographic data, sex and age. The IPIP added a difference between the groups in the personality trait conscientiousness. The students of the Geestelijke Gezondheid minor scored higher. The students of the group Spirit scored higher in the dimensions agreeableness and openness to experience than in other dimensions. Also, no significant differences were found with the GMI. The students scored highest in the dimension Experiental Growth. The motivations which arise from interviews are intrinsic and have a professional or personal view. The students are searching for answers of questions about their life. Conclusions. This study shows that the traits of the Spirit-students are not much from other students. They have chosen for the minor to learn more about themselves and to come further with their search for the sense of their life. With this knowledge they feel better to work with patients or workmates.
