Abstract:Compensatory health beliefs are beliefs that can be used to offset the negative aspects of unhealthy behavior by implementing healthy behavior. An example of such a belief is: ‘I don’t have to exercise tonight, because I ate healthy all day today’. Goal: the goal of this research was to develop a reliable and valid questionnaire to measure compensatory health beliefs regarding exercise. There was also looked at the degree in which this questionnaire adds something to the theory of planed behavior and the self efficacy. Method: In this research there was a qualitative research to generate the items for the questionnaire. Next, there was a quantitative survey study to determine the reliability and the validity of the questionnaire. Results: three factors were found in the questionnaire. There was one factor for the exercise behavior of people, one factor for the daily exercise of people and one factor which contains compensatory health beliefs about skipping exercise. The internal consistence of the questionnaire is good. There were correlations fount between compensatory health beliefs and the exercise questionnaire, the self efficacy and the determinant subjective norm from the theory of planed behavior. Conclusion: there is a reliable questionnaire developed for measuring compensatory health beliefs. There was no construct validity found. There was also found that the compensatory health beliefs scale had no predictive value in explaining physical activity in addition to the self-efficacy and the theory of planned behavior.
