Abstract:This study was conducted to gain insight in the effects of group membership and feelings of guilt on perspective taking of ex-perpetrators. One expectation was that the respondents would score higher on readiness for perspective taking when the ex-perpetrator belongs to an out-group rather than when he belongs to an in-group. The other expectation was that the readiness for taking perspective of an out-group ex-perpetrator would be intensified after induction of feelings of guilt concerning the out-group. These expectations were measured through an online-survey study whereby the group membership of the ex-perpetrator and the feelings of guilt of the participants were manipulated. No evidence was found to confirm the two hypotheses. However, an interesting and unexpected interaction effect was found. It seems that the manipulation of guilt feelings had effect on anxiety and difficulty in readiness to perspective taking of an out-group ex-perpetrator in the experimental condition. Based on this finding the second hypothesis – the manipulation of guilt feelings would intensify the readiness for taking perspective – could be discarded. The readiness for taking perspective of an in-group ex-perpetrator seemed to be stronger after induction of guilt feelings while the participants’ readiness to take perspective of an out-group ex-perpetrator was stronger when there was no such manipulation. Maybe it is up to a kind of defensive process, which could be interpreted from the findings in the experimental condition, where respondents showed a resistant attitude towards perspective taking by reporting anxiety after guilt feelings were induced. Because of the small amount of research on this field there are some implications given for further research.
