Abstract:Chronic pain knows many consequences on physical, mental and social areas. People who live with chronic pain often have had many treatments within these areas. These treatments are often intense and focus on the prevention of the pain. They do not always lead to the desired result. As an answer to this the University of Twente developed a self-help internet treatment based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). ACT does not focus on the pain, but teaches people life a valuable life. Therefore the intervention uses mindfulness exercises. The intervention "get more out of your life with pain" is examined and the first results are promising. This study evaluates the user experience of the participants with the intervention. Specifically the user experience with the components uses in the intervention (information, mindfulness, metaphors, exercises, diary, email feedback and experience stories). The following research question was answered: "What are the user experiences of the participants in the online intervention "get more out of your life with pain" with the components used in the intervention?". The study consisted of 18 participants aged 18 to 72 years. The data was collected trough a telephone interview. The results show that the components mindfulness and the exercises have the greatest impact on the daily lives with chronic pain. These components were valued positive and the current use was still very high. Some components (metaphors, diary and feedback mail) scored remarkably lower on certain categories than the other components did. These components were experienced less useful during and after the intervention. Recommendations that emerged from the study are solving technical problems, more personal, avoid the use of jargon and reflect better to the target group (type of pain).
