Abstract:Lately there is a increase shown in people with cancer. Because of the longer survival period of cancer patients most of the pressure for taking care of the patients comes down to the partner of cancer patients. Common problems among partners are anxiety, depression and burden (or caregiver burden). Posttraumatic growth is a positive outcome during this traumatic period. However, there is almost no research conducted on posttraumatic growth in partners of cancer patients. Goal of this research is to evaluate whether posttraumatic growth exists in partners of cancer patients and to what extend variables like age, caregiver burden and mental health are related to posttraumatic growth. Therefore a questionnaire has been generated with different constructs concerning health and experience of the partner. The total number of respondents in this study is 138 people, with age ranging from 30 to 81. This research shows that posttraumatic growth occurs among partners of cancer patients, although no high scores where shown. Furthermore this research shows that age, country of birth, employment status, form of cancer, time since diagnosis and current treatment are predictors for the development of posttraumatic growth. Also caregiver burden and psychological and mental health show a relation with posttraumatic growth. More research on this topic needs to be conducted to further explore the relationships between these variables and explore the development of posttraumatic growth and to enhance the knowledge about this topic.
