Abstract:This study was designed to investigate the victim’s willingness to participate in victim-offender mediation. Mainly, this study tried to gain insight into the connection of personality traits and the influence of gravity of an offence as well as the age of the offender on the victim’s willingness to participate in victim-offender mediation. This study made use of an experiment in which the gravity of the offence and the age of the offender were manipulated. Each questionnaire contained three fictitious scenarios with different offences which only were different within the participants. The purpose was that the participants tried to image that they were the victims of the offences. The expectation was that citizens felt inclined to participate in victim-offender mediation if the gravity of the offence was high rather than low. Additionally, there was the anticipation that citizens felt inclined to participate in victim-offender mediation if the offender was a juvenile rather than an adult. Furthermore, there were three expectations composed referring to the personality traits extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. There was the propostition that a positive relation between extraversion on the one hand and agreeableness on the other hand and the willingness to participate in victim-offender mediation exists. A negative relation was expected between neuroticism and the willingness to participate. This study produced evidence that citizens who score high at extraversion are more willing to participate in victim-offender mediation rather than citizens who score low at extraversion. Moreover, there was a trend discovered relating to the age of the offender. The participants were a bit more willing to participate if the offender was juvenile rather than adult. No other significant effects could be detected what will be outlined in the discussion.
