Abstract:Background Video games can influence human behavior. This could possibly be the case for video games in which risks can be taken with impunity. This study examined if these video games generate an unrealistic feeling of invulnerability in the players. Method Participants (N = 140) were randomly assigned to one of three versions of Super Mario (three, six and infinite number of lives). Subsequently, they answered questions concerning three cases that have to do with ’daily life’ risks. The risk aspects that were measured are perceived vulnerability, severity, fear, self-e_cacy, and risk intention. Results Unexpectedly, no e_ect of the number of lives in Super Mario on perceived severity and fear was found. The case with superior questionnaire items was analysed again, after participants that did not play the video game long enough were removed from the data. This showed that participants who played with an infinite amount of lives perceived risks as less severe than participants who played with three lives. Conclusion The results indicate that the number of lives in a video game a_ect someone’s perceived risk severity. In order to better understand the influence of video games on risk perception and intention, more research is required.
