Abstract:Fear appeals are frequently used for information campaigns in the area of traffic safety. Still there is not really a consensus in scientific literature over the effects of fear appeals and the required context. The at the time probably most popular model with reference to fear appeals is the Executive Parallel Process Model (EPPM) from Witte. This model does not only include the fear appeal but also promotes other factors like self-efficacy and response efficacy. The present study aims to to learn more about the influence of response efficacy within the EPPM in the context of traffic safety. Therefore an online-experiment was conducted with 2 conditions: via adding or not-adding a reliable source to the efficacy message it was tried to manipulate response efficacy. However the results indicate that the manipulation had no effect at all.
