Abstract:The common ingroup identity model has been a guiding framework for the improvement of intergroup relations. Recent studies however have shown that intergroup harmony can have adverse effects on collective action intentions. The present article extends the research on collective action by investigating the influence of just-world beliefs. It was argued that just-world beliefs moderate the negative effects of a common ingroup identity representation on collective action intentions among majority group members. Results indicated no significant interaction effects between the two factors on collective action intentions. Problematic outcomes of the interaction between a common identity and just-world beliefs could however be indicated. Implications for future research on intergroup relations and collective action intentions are discussed.
