Abstract:The present study attempted to chart the relationship between three variables, namely depression symptoms, cognitive functioning and anxiety symptoms and the capability to retrieve specific positive autobiographical memories. The attempt to find out about cognition and its connection with the ability to retrieve specific positive memories is the innovative aspect of this study. The main question was therefore to what extent cognitive functioning is related to the ability to retrieve specific positive memories, when controlling for depression and anxiety symptoms. For the purposes of this study, a questionnaire was presented among the elderly with the age of 65 years or older, which also looked at the number of specific, positive memories which one could retrieve. The results, as already emerged from the literature, showed that depression symptoms were most strongly and significantly associated with the ability to retrieve specific positive memories. The variables cognition and anxiety had no significant correlation with memories. The correlation nature of the present study limits the amount of conclusions that can be drawn. Recommendations are made and the limitations of this study are discussed
