Abstract:In order to support a German insurance company to cope with the challenges of demographic change and on-going globalization, the study at hand aims at enabling a strategic, proactive perspective on the management of competence. A three stage research model has been designed that starts with enabling a foundation for strategic competence management by finding gaps between scientifically proposed strategic competence management and practices in place at the insurance company. In continues with enabling employee categorization into job families and by developing related competence profiles. In the last stage, these competencies have been projected into a 5 year future perspective in order to identify anticipated imbalances and to create motivation to close prior competence management gaps. For the gap analysis, as well as for the design of job-families and related competencies, several focus-groups have been used.
