Abstract:Day-care centre De Toermalijn offers care, support and treatment to mentally and disabled children up to 18 years. These children sometimes need special products. Walking is an important activity for the children, but unfortunately most children cannot walk long distances and therefore need to have a buggy. Considering the fact that there are only buggies available for children up to the age of four, a problem arises for older children. For this reason De Toermalijn has asked for help and created the following assignment: Design and make a product that can carry two children and is suitable for children in the age range of eight to nine years. This assignment offers much freedom when it comes to product design. First, both the target group and the user have been analyzed in order to gain useful insight into the requirements of the product. The conclusion was that the seats will be the most important aspect of the design. Market research has been performed in order to get a clear overview of the possible solutions for the product. With this research the main focus was on buggies and carts. The research served as a source of inspiration for generating the concepts of the product. The main function of the product is the safe transport of two children in the age range of eight to nine. Therefore, when generating the drafts this aspect was central. The point of departure consisted of the two seats. In many ways there has been experimented with the position of the seats in the product. The safe positioning of the children alone is not sufficient for a decent product design. For example, the product should not be too big or too heavy, because then it is hard to steer the buggy. In addition, the product should offer the user the possibility to position the children easily in the seat, as the child cannot always do this him or herself. Furthermore, the product should suit the budget. The dimensions, choice of material, choice of tires, construction and the use of colour of the product have all been taken into account in the final development of the concept. On the basis of a model developed in Solid Works, a prototype has been built. This prototype has been tested on functioning and the results of this can be found in the evaluation. Based on this evaluation conclusions and recommendations are given.
