Abstract:Facebook may provide an opportunity for cyber criminals to exploit personal information from an indivual. Identity theft can have serious consequences, so it is important that people will protect their personal information well on social media like Facebook. Public service announcements as Alert Online are designed to protect people from this danger by giving them advice on how they can take protective measures. This study examined factors that affect the adoption of self-protective measures and seeking risk relevant information. In this research an experimental design was used to measure the effects of different levels of response efficacy and source credibility on seeking risk relevant information and on taking self-protective measures. Whether the effect of response efficacy and source credibility on taking self-protective measures is mediated by information seeking behaviour is examined. Also, the effect of rewards that one takes from Facebook and personal relevance on seeking risk relevant information and on taking self-protective measures is examined. The results are based on the responses of 132 respondents. The manipulations of source credibility and response efficacy had the desired effect. A significant negative correlation was found between the intention to take self-protective measures and the variables how many Facebook friends someone has and how many times someone is active on Facebook. A moderate to strong positive correlation was found between the intention to seek information and the intention to take self-protective measures. Respondents who experienced more rewards from Facebook expressed less intention to take self-protective measures. Personal relevance of the risk had a positive relationship with the intention to seek information. Implications for practice and recommendations for future research are given.
