Abstract:Background. Mental disorders like major depression and anxiety disorders occur frequently among the Dutch population. In the Netherlands, one in five persons suffer from a mental disorder. This causes a reduction in the quality of life and increases costs of treatment, unemployment and illness. The treatment of major depression and anxiety disorders focus exclusively on the reduction of mental illness. At the same time, there is less attention for the positive mental health. Due to high percentage on relapses of current treatments, there has been a considering interest in the promotion of mental health. This study emphases on the use of such intervention ‘Well Being Therapie’ (WBT) and determines the effects on mental health after successful reduction of mental illness. This study investigates how WBT can increase mental health and reduces mental illness. Furthermore the process is evaluated of this new positive treatment. Methods. Eighteen participants with depressive and/or anxiety symptoms were included in this study and were non-randomly divided in two groups: an intervention group and a control group. Participants in the intervention group followed the WBT for nine weeks and completed homework on a daily bases. Questionnaires were used to measure the primary outcome variables: positive mental health, social-, emotional- and psychological wellbeing. Psychological wellbeing is further examined in Environmental mastery, Personal growth, Purpose in life, Self-acceptance, autonomy, Positive relations with others. Mental illness is divided in depression and anxiety as outcome variable. Outcome measures included: mental health (measured by the MHC-SF), Positive mental health (PGGS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ-8). Interviews were held to examine the expectations of participants. Analysis of Covariances (Ancova) were used to significantly test for the difference in outcome variables between the groups. An alpha of <0.05 was used. Results. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) showed that the participants in the intervention conditions improved significantly on the mental health scale, social- and psychological wellbeing. These effects were not found on emotional wellbeing and mental illness. Satisfaction Questionnaire shows that the levels of satisfaction were high. The interviews determine that WBT has an extra value for participants. The switch between mental illness and mental health is considered as smooth and logic by most of the participants. Furthermore there has been an increase in psychological wellbeing and no decrease in mental illness. The group is a positive improvement on mental health and considers as such by all of the participants. Conclusion. This first pilot-study shows that WBT in a group can fruitfully increase the positive mental health, psychological and social wellbeing. The group seems to be an edit value to increase mental health even more. The reduction of mental illness is not promoted by the wellbeing therapy. Further research is recommended is to examine the effects of this group therapy that exclusively focus on the promotion of wellbeing.
