Abstract:he public’s trust in the police in the Netherlands is not very high. In recent years there has been attempted to increase the trust by more '' blue'' on the street, more visible police. The European Social Survey (2010) shows that little has changed in the public’s trust in recent years. Possibly more '' blue'' on the street is not the right approach for increasing the trust. It was also found that the media affects the trust of the citizens. Negative media reports provide less trust in the police and positive media messages for more trust. The consensus model of Earle (2010) states that there are two types of trust: relational trust and calculative trust. Ultimately, there are three possible models for the relationship between relational trust, calculative trust, negative / positive media messages, perception of safety and acceptability prepared on the basis of the theory. The goal of the study was to investigate how relational trust and calculative trust of citizens are affected by negative reports of acts of the police in the media. The study is a 2 (Valence: Negative vs. Positive) x 2 (Intention: intentional vs. Non- intentional) between subjects design. Respondents were given a media message in which the police made a negative or positive act, that act was intentional or non-intentional. The results show that none of the three models was supported by the data. It is found that there is a positive relationship between relational and calculative trust. There is also a positive relationship between perceived safety and relational trust. For designing an intervention to increase the trust of citizens in the police there should be first focused on perceived safety. When the perceived safety of people is increased, then the relational trust increases and thus also the calculative trust.
