Abstract:Introduction: Problematic gambling (PrG) is the end result of a complex interaction of psychological, environmental, genetic and biological factors. Abnormalities have been found in different brain areas of Problematic gamblers (PrG’s). These abnormalities lead to a biological vulnerability to impulsivity in PrG’s. Pathological gamblers (PG’s) have a score above average in terms of impulsivity. It is suspected that impulsivity plays an important role in the early drop-out during treatment of Gokkendebaas.nl. This study focuses on the question whether there is a relationship between the degree of impulsiveness and drop-outs in internet treatment. Methods: We used the data of 191 clients who participated in the internet treatment Gokkendebaas.nl during the period of February 2009 till February 2012. The intake questionnaire was used to collect demographic information. Impulsivity is measured by the BIS-11. It looks at the total impulsivity score and the three subscales: non-planning impulsivity, motor impulsivity and attentional impulsivity. An independent t-test, chi-square test and an one-way ANOVA are used as statistical analyses. Results: The results showed that the clients who have completed the treatment do not differ significantly in the different impulsivity scores from the clients who dropped out. Clients who drop-out earlier in the treatment do not score higher on impulsivity than clients who drop-out later in the treatment. A significant difference has been found between recreational gamblers, problem gamblers and pathological gamblers in terms of the total impulsivity (F (2, 117) = 3.99, p = .02) and motor impulsivity (F (2, 117) = 4.62, p = .01). Pathological gamblers have more impulsive actions and acted more directly than recreational gamblers and problem gamblers. Discussion: This study proved that clients who drop-out from the treatment are not more impulsive than clients who complete the treatment. No relation has been found between impulsivity and drop-out from the treatment. However, pathological gamblers do have a higher degree of impulsivity in comparison with recreational gamblers and problem gamblers. Impulsivity does seem to be important in the case of pathological gamblers. It still remains unclear whether the degree of impulsivity or even other elements are important in the premature drop-out of the treatment. A recommendation is to further investigate the effect of impulsivity of pathological gamblers and to investigate which aspects are important in treatment failure.
