Abstract:Objective - The internet offers a wide variety of web-based treatment programs for addiction problems. An example is the web-based treatment program for problem drinking Alcoholdebaas.nl. The objective of this study is to better understand the treatment adherence and treatment success within this web-based treatment program. It will be examined whether there exist predictors for the completion of treatment or having treatment success. Methods - The baseline characteristics of the clients who have logged on to the web-based treatment program in the period 2009-2011 were examined. Logistic regression analyses examined if there were baseline predictors for therapy adherence and treatment success. Results - The results showed that the probability of therapy adherence is higher in woman, clients with a higher level of education, a higher age and a higher age at which the alcohol consumption is recognized as a problem. It also shows that clients who do not smoke and do have a love alcoholic week total at intake, have a greater chance to complete the treatment. The logistic regression model with all predictors (R2=0.104) shows that smoking can be seen as the strongest predictor of therapy adherence. This study also shows that treatment success is higher in men and clients with a lower level of education. It also shows that clients, who have a daily rhythm, use no drugs, do not gambling and have a lower week total of alcoholic units at intake, have more treatment success. The logistic regression model with all the predictors (R2=0.198) shows that the week total alcoholic units at intake can be seen as the strongest predictor of treatment success. Conclusion - Therapy adherence and therapy success should be high, if the client would benefit from the web-based treatment program. This study is relevant because it has contributed to the determination which clients are at risk to fall out prematurely and which predictors are important. This study has also given more insight in the predictors of therapy success. It revealed that the variables gender, education, alcohol use at intake and daily rhythm had a predictive value for both therapy adherence and therapy success. Gender and education were opposite to each other. Discussion - Specific determinants are needed to improve the therapy adherence and therapy success. For further research it is interesting to look at other predictors of therapy adherence and therapy success. An example of such a predictor is the role of the therapist.
