Abstract:his study aimed to find an opportunity to make it easier for sellers in book, games and DVD stores to advise their customers. Due to the fact that the personal preferences of customers play a major role, their advice cannot only be based on the quality of products. Using an artificial neural network which has been developed by Rumelhart (1986) three new networks have been constructed and were trained to learn the characteristics of books. During the training stage all of the characteristic were related to particular contexts, which were stored as input neurons in the networks. Due to those relationships, the networks were able to cluster certain properties. This study showed that the networks were also able to relate characteristics that belong to different contexts. For instance, authors could not just be related to their books but also to the topics of their books, if those books repeatedly have the same topic. The analysis of the networks showed that they all are able to make such connections. However, further research will be needed and the networks will have to be improved before they could be used in practice. By saving characteristics of books in such a neural network it could be possible for sellers to quickly find out what books (or other products) in his shop are similar to the favorite books of the customer.
