Abstract:he present study is an explorative study, which searches for the relationship between narrative futuring and mental health. For this a selection of 231 ‘letters from the future’ was analyzed. The letters were already collected within previous research. Here 592 mostly Dutch and German students were asked to write a letter to themselves or anybody else from a positive moment in the future. During the first analysis was determined which sequences of psychological functions the letter from the future typifies. And the second analysis then looked for a relationship between those sequences and wellbeing. Based on the analysis of sequences different types of letters could be identified. They were divided into different classes like retrospective, prospective and other. The types are to a different degree related to wellbeing. The retrospective types are negative and the prospective types except for one type are positive correlated with wellbeing. This result could be explained by the composition of the letters in relation to the present psychological functions. It was deemed, among others, necessary that next to imaging the future there must be thought of some specific goals and plans of how to achieve this future. For other results like the negative correlation between the retrospective types en wellbeing could no explanation be found. This could be target of future research.
