| Abstract: | Many environmental problems are caused by human behavior (Vlek & Steg, 2007). People do not behave in consistently sustainable ways, probably because beside environmental considerations there are a lot of other factors which steer behavior, such as status, comfort, effort and potential (Steg & Vlek, 2009; Cleveland, Kalamas, Laroche, 2012). This research will identify cognitive factors, social factors and demographic characteristics in relationship to environmentally conscious intention and environmentally conscious behavior. The goal is to gain more insight into factors that can positively influence sustainable behavior in relation to food. All variables self-efficacy, response efficacy, risk perception, injunctive norm, descriptive norm, personal identity, socio-demographic characteristics, anxiety, environmentally conscious intention and environmentally conscious behavior are analyzed in correlation to each other. Subsequently hierarchical regression analysis is used to identify to what extent the variance is explained by the variables in both environmentally conscious intention and environmentally conscious behavior. All variables explain 59 percent of the variance in environmentally conscious behavior and 37 percent amongst environmentally conscious intention. Where intention and behavior are explained by different variables. Most socio-demographic characteristics are significant for intention, but not for behavior. Personal identity is the best “predictor” in both intention and behavior and seems to include effects of other variables. It can be concluded that the addition of social factors, especially personal identity, is important when predicting environmentally conscious behavior. |
