Abstract:The present study examined possible associations between risk perceptions, Machiavellianism and uncertainty avoidance, and students’ cheating intentions. A cross-sectional survey was conducted. A convenience sample including 111 participants was used for the study. All participants needed to fill in an online questionnaire that consisted of statements about Machiavellianism, social desirability, uncertainty avoidance, risk perceptions, expected cheating intentions and previous cheating behaviours respectively. There were two versions of the questionnaires, differing on perceived risk in a fictional representation of an exam situation with either a high, or a low expected chance of getting caught. Most of the variables showed moderate to good levels of internal consistency, except some items on the risk perception scales. These items were first analyzed separately, and then the most suitable items were used to construct a new risk perceptions scale. The findings indicated that the aspects on the risk perceptions scale did correlate negatively significant with cheating intentions. Against expectations, Machiavellianism did not correlate positively significant with cheating intentions. Finally, interaction effects of Machiavellianism and uncertainty avoidance were not significant for the relation between risk perceptions and cheating intentions. As a whole, the findings indicate that the respondents use risk perceptions when they have to decide to cheat or not. It also seems that the influence of Machiavellianism and uncertainty avoidance on cheating intentions needs to be further explored.
