Abstract:It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the success of smartphones. In 2012 there were almost 5,5 million smartphoneowners just in the Netherlands. Although there have been a lot of studies examining the influence that possessions, like clothes, have on first impressions, no single study has addressed the influence of smartphones in this domain. In a zero acquaintance context, where there has been no previous encounter with a person, people are able to form an approximate first impression, even through only interpreting cues such as possessions which are used to communicate the identity of its owner. This thesis intends to assess whether a target person holding a smartphone is perceived as more extravert by others than that same person without a smartphone. The study was conducted in the form of a survey, with data being gathered via internet. The sample consisted of 43 students divided into two conditions. Respondents were asked to rate target persons shown on photos on the dimension extraversion. In the control condition, target persons without a smartphone had to be rated. In the experimental condition, the same target persons had to be rated, but now shown with a smartphone in their hand. Unfortunately, this study revealed no significant difference in the judgment of people with a smartphone compared to those without a smartphone. The gender of respondents and target persons also had no effect on the personality estimation.
