Abstract:Since the last years is there attention for subjects that concern healthy behavior and healthy living. There are different models and theories which try to describe and explain health behavior. The definition of health in general and healthy living is often subject of discussions. Earlier researchs suggests that health consists of factors like exercising, diet, smoking and use of alcohol or drugs but also sleeping. There is less research done about sleeping behavior and its consequences for health. This research is based on this fact and tries to find explanations and predictions for sleeping behavior. In order to explain sleeping behavior this factor is split into two domains: quantity and quality of sleep. For both domains was tried to find relationships with personality factors, planned behavior and compensatory health beliefs. The target group of this research consists of students of the University of Twente and other academic institutions in Enschede. By the means of an online survey was tried to find explanations and predictions over sleep behavior of the target group. For this survey were questions used based on the theory of planned behavior, questions of the Ten- item- personality- inventory for measuring personality factors and the Compensatory health belief Scale DLV in order to measure compensatory health beliefs. The quality and quantity of sleep were measured with help of the MOS Sleep Scale. For analyzing sleep quality is the Sleep Problems Index II used, which reflects the degree of sleep problems. For every questionnaire are total scores calculated that were analyzed by bivariate and multivariate analyzes. This research proves that demographic factors like gender, age, weight, the study and year of studying are related to sleep behavior. Beside that the attitude, perceived behavior control, scores of neuroticism and carefulness are also related to sleep behavior. Furthermore was no relationship found between sleep behavior and compensatory health beliefs which was a special point of the discussion later on. The interpretations of the scores were based on factors like social desirability and biological results that can explain sleep behavior. Especially individual differences, gender differences and differences of age are tested.
