Abstract:The study was conducted to see to what extent parents of children between the age of 5 and 8 years old are using measures supporting the traffic education of their children and whether they connect to their needs. If there is need to improve or change these measures this will emerge from the study. The theory of planned behaviour of Ajzen and Fishbein (1977) and the Information Seeking and Processing Model of Griffin, Dunwoody, and Neuwirth (1999) are used. Through the completion of a questionnaire by 83 parents we determined what parents do for the traffic education and what influence parameters such as risk perception, institutional trust and self-efficacy have on the traffic education behaviour and information seeking behaviour. The results show that only 27% of parents seek additional information but 81% educate their children themselves. The self-efficacy and the opinion of the parent on the information positively correlated with the traffic education behaviour. The institutional trust correlates negatively with it. The opinion of the parent on the information and risk perception correlate positively with information seeking behaviour. In conclusion, it appears that few parents search for additional information but they still connect to their needs. Parents seem to be convinced that they can give their children a good traffic education.
