Abstract:A greater feeling of trust in the police can lead to an increased feeling of security and a decreased feeling of fear among citizens. In addition, trust of citizens in the police is seen as an important criterion for good police work and acceptation of authority and police operation. There is a lot of research available concerning trust in the police, most of which was done in the United States and other non-European countries. These studies provide factors that are related with trust in the police. The current study aims to determine if these relations can be found among Dutch respondents and if these factors can predict the trust in the police. The four central factors in this research are divided in: ‘direct experience’ containing: 1. police contact, 2. victimization and ‘indirect experience’: 3. police-related reality-TV and 4. fear of crime. Furthermore, two demographic variables have been take into account, age and gender. In total, 145 respondents participated in the online survey. Statistical analysis of the data consisted of determining correlations and conducting regression analysis. The results show that especially the assessment of the police contact and assessment of the television programs are related with trust in the police. Additionally, both victimization and fear of crime are negatively related with the trust in the police. The results of this study can be implied within the police policy. The contact with the citizens should have a high priority, since a positive assessment of the contact with the police could lead to a greater feeling of trust in the police. Further research should focus on this assessment of contact to determine which aspects and which sorts of contact are specifically related to the trust in the police. To conclude, current study has taken television programs into account, other forms of media have not been researched. The assessment of these television programs was found to be positively related to trust in the police. Further research could focus on police related information on the internet and social media.
