Abstract:Background: This thesis ‘Self-defining memories of young adolescents and their mental health’ describes both a qualitative and a quantitative research about a possible correlation between the various dimensions of self-defining memories and the mental health of a sample of young Dutch adolescents. Besides that this study also examines how the different dimensions are divided in the self-defining memoires of young adolescents. At last, this study also tries to examine the correlation between redemption and/or contamination sequences and anxiety or depression. This study is focused on obtaining and increasing new understandings. Research until now is limited and needs more research. Method: The research design of the whole research is a longitudinal research design and contains three different moments of measurement. This study has focused on the results of the first measurement and is a cross-sectional research. Respondents for this study were acquired through the online LISS panel and exists of a population of young Dutch adolescents between the age of 16 to 30 years (M = 23.66, SD = 4.27), with a total sample of N= 170. During this study the Self-defining memory task (SDMT) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were used to analyze the data. Results: The results indicate that themes as social relations, activities, school, education, work and career are typical for the content of self-defining memories of young Dutch adolescents. Besides that, young adolescents use mostly generic and positive events in their self-defining memories. Young adolescents are mostly capable to acknowledge a positive meaning of their self-defining memory and for the self. Both the variables anxiety and depression have a significant correlation with various dimensions of self-defining memories. There is a correlation between symptoms of anxiety and negative events and negative evaluation. Symptoms of depression seem to correlate with a lesser degree of positive memories or memories with a positive evaluation or meaning. At last, contamination sequences seem to have a stronger association with anxiety than redemption sequences. There is no difference in association between depression, redemption and contamination. Conclusion: Based on the results, we can conclude that there is a correlation between the different dimensions of self-defining memories and symptoms of anxiety or depression in a sample of young Dutch adolescents. This research and the results of this research provide new insights into the correlation between the different variables. Further research is needed to specify the relation between self-defining memories and anxiety and depression. This research not only does some suggestions for further research but also for some practical implications of self-defining memories of young adolescents.
