Abstract:Many research has been conducted in the area of deception and lying behaviour, where most of this research aims on clues to deception, cognitive load, or physical surrounding influences. Surprisingly however, research on the effects of social categorization on deception is virtually non-existent, while there is good reason to expect that group context can affect the intent to lie. This study examines whether group context indeed affects the intention to lie, and whether the type of lie might be involved in this process. This study will also find out if the illusion of transparency is an explanatory factor for this effect. To answer these questions, a survey has been conducted, which shows indeed that group context effects the intention to lie. Secondly, this effect is enhanced when just using a self-directed lie. There was no effect found with a white lie. Also, there’s no evidence that the illusion of transparency is an explanatory factor.
