Abstract:According to the Social Identity Theory a person’s identity and self esteem are influenced by his group membership (Tajfel & Turner, 1979). How is ingroup identification with an ethnic minority group influenced in case of a perceived external and internal threat regarding the group identity? To answer this question a research has been conducted using a survey within the Assyrian Community in Enschede, the Netherlands (N = 87). Assyrians have to deal with an external threat in the form of categorization threats from the majority group and an internal threat in relation to the entitativity of the group. The results show that the two types of threats are related differently with minority and majority group identification. Perceived threats regarding to the categories ‘ethnic minority group’ and ‘majority group’ are positively related to ingroup identification. Being placed within a (Muslim) outgroup is negatively related to identification with the majority group. A perceived threat, due to a decline of the entitativity of the ingroup, negatively influences the relation between the perceived entitativity and the identification with the ingroup. In case of a negative relationship the ethnic minority group no longer positively contributes to the identity and the self esteem of a groupmember. That’s why it does need attention of both the government and the Assyrian association.
