Abstract:This study investigated if there is a possible relationship between recognizing a correct research question and the development of executive functions in elementary school students. Recognizing a proper research question underlies the formulation of a good research question, which is the first step in inquiry learning. Formulating a proper research question is the key to a good research process. Research has shown that students in grade 8 and higher experience difficulties in formulating a good research question. For this reason, this study investigated whether elementary school students are able to recognize a good research question. In total 173 pupils of grade 2, 4 and 6 were tested on the skills of the recognition of a good research question, the executive functions and intelligence level. The results show that pupils in grade 6 recognize a research question better than pupils in grade 2. A part of the executive functions, inhibition, appears to have a strong relationship with the recognition of a research question. The development of inhibition tends to be important for recognizing the proper research question and ignore distractors. Intelligence appears to have a strong consistency with recognizing the correct research question as well. These results may provide the first evidence to support primary school pupils in investigative learning, in particular recognizing the proper research.
