Abstract:Why do people behave in groups the way they do? The reason we asked this question were some severe accidents with large groups, for example the escalation of the Loveparade 2010 in Düsseldorf or the confrontation between police and hooligans. In this case, and many other cases, a large group of people started to behave totally different then what an individual would do. We asked why this occurred and which specific conditions precipitated the phenomenon? Previous research shows that group acceptation might be one of the keyconcepts in this process. Acceptation affects the way people act towards a group norm. In addition, it influences the self regulation people have. The effect of acceptance is showed by behavior from the people in the group. Those people show behavior according to the group norm or contradicting with it. The influence of acceptance should be mediated by self regulation. This kind of acceptation influences self regulation, consequently, the ease of letting go of the personal norms and accepting the group norms as their own. Here is the part where social identity plays a major role. To execute the purpose of the research an online survey was used. This means that the people never were in a situation with other people. They were told a scenario in which they encounter a group and start mountain climbing. In every scenario there is a different level of acceptance (Totally accepted, maybe acceptance in the future and no acceptance at all), added to that the group norm differs from risk taking to risk avoidance. Even though they never met any other person we hoped to find an effect of the acceptance. This did not happen, but another not significant effect was found. Instead of the maybe accepted people behave more according to the group norm, the not accepted people behaved in the total opposite way. This suits the principle “If you can’t join them, beat them” and might be an interesting starting point for a next research.
