Abstract:This study is an qualitative and explorative research on the experience of aging. The main purpose is to explore what the individual experience their own aging looks like in a less positive experience of aging and what are the differences and similarities in how aging is experienced. The participants were selected based on their age and their scores on the Experience of Aging Scale (BOWS) in the participation in a previous study conducted by Psychology students of Twente University. In total 31 potential participants in the age of 55-61 were approached of which 12 were prepared to participate in this study. In 6 cases the scores on the BOWS indicated a less positive experience of aging. These participants were interviewed with the use of a semi-structured interview scheme that was designed especially for this purpose. The interviews were analyzed with the techniques of open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The end result of the analysis consists of 7 core theme’s, composed of 14 theme’s with 66 labels. The interviews provide a detailed image of the individuals and their stories concerning their personal experience of aging. It was shown that there are many different subjects that influence one’s experience of aging. The 7 core theme’s that are shown to influence the personal experience of aging are: 1) Health and vitality, 2) Potential of personal possibilities, 3) Social environment, 4) Life- contemplation, 5) Society, 6) Work and pension and 7) Specific individual circumstances. The context, the surroundings and circumstances in which one finds oneself, seems essential in how aging is experienced and is responsible for the similarities and differences in the individual experience of aging. The similarities are mostly in the inherent aspect of aging, while the differences are for the largest part in de totally different and unique life situation. Considering the wide diversity of factors deduced from a mere 6 interviews and the lack of saturation, it is recommended to carry out further qualitative research on the factors influencing a less positive experience of aging in individuals aging 55-61 years old.
