Abstract:The Police academy in the Netherlands is struggling with high drop-out rates among their students. According to the latest research the drop-out rate is 19 percent. This translates into 400 students who leave the Police academy per year. The goal of this research was to get insight in this turn-over and to find out what the influence is of different organizational stressors (intrinsic to work, relationships with others, organizational structure and climate, career perspectives, organizational roles, alignment home-work) and support on job stress and drop-out. Also it was researched if active and/ or passive coping had a moderating effect on the relationship between organizational stressors and job stress. 65 drop-outs and 193 students participated in this research. The research was done by a questionnaire in retrospect that was sent to the respondents by email and/or the mail. Results show that drop-outs score significantly higher on the stressors ‘organizational roles’, ‘relationships with others’, ‘career perspectives’ and also experience significantly less support from their managers. Drop-outs also score significantly higher on job stress. Students in general experience more job stress because of the stressors ‘relationships with others’, ‘alignment home-work’ and ‘career perspectives’. There were no moderating effects found for both active and passive coping on the relationship between the different organizational stressors and job stress. Students who used a more active way of coping did experience less job stress, whilst students who use a more passive way of coping experience more job stress. Overall it can be said that, in particular, the personal imbedding within the Police academy has the most impact on both job stress and drop-out. A good organization of education with clear goals seems to be a recommendation to prevent future drop-out. Emphasis needs to be put on openness from the Police academy so students know what they can expect and how they stand within the organization, but also on the right support from managers and relationships with others.
