Abstract:The goal of the project was to determine if it is feasible to combine a heart rate monitor with headphones. Using a questionnaire, information was gathered about preferences and behavior regarding headphones. The conclusion of this questionnaire is that the product HeartLive will be used in transit a lot, therefore the product has to be easy to take with you. Next to this, it became clear that comfort, price and sound quality are the biggest reasons to purchase a particular kind of headphone. With the information from the questionnaire and the additional information provided by the HeartLive foundation a Program of Demands was built. This Program was used to substantiate choices that were made and, in the end, to answer the main question of the assignment. One of the first choices that was made was to continue on with the over-ear kind of headphones. Due to its size this kind is the most suitable for the product HeartLive. Recharging the product will be done through a mini-usb connection. The accompanying battery that was chosen is a Li-ion battery that is normally used in handheld game consoles. This choice was made based on the benefits of a Li-ion battery over a NiMH battery. Furthermore, it was decided to integrate the functions of the current product HeartLive completely with the headphones; this means they cannot be detached from each other and they cannot be used separately. This choice is based on a lack of space in the casing of the ear pads and to avoid problems with the detachment and reattachment of the two parts. One ear pad will contain the circuit board and the other will contain the battery for the same reason; lack of space. The ear-clip that is responsible for measuring the heart rate is attached to the ear pad that contains the circuit board. The ear-clip is attached externally to the headphone. A short cable is offered for use on the go and a longer one is included for use of the product without the need to put the headphones on. From the concepts that were made based on the information above, the choice was made to go with an oval shaped headphone with a soft and fragile appearance. The concept has been further detailed with regard to adjustability, dimensions, and connections between the parts and so on. The result is a 3D model of the final design which serves as a way of communication. The eventual conclusion is made using the Program of Demands that was made earlier. Each demand is examined on whether it was achieved or not. Based on this examination the question in the ‘Doelstelling’ segment can be answered with a ‘Yes, it is feasible to combine a wireless headphone with a heart rate monitor. In the last part, recommendations are made to further inspect a couple of subjects in the follow-up process.
