Abstract:Central to this essay is the development of a new device, the Re-printer. A device that creates, on the spot, new products from used beer cups. This device can be placed on festivals where visitors can insert their old beer cups. From these cups, a souvenir or gadget is made, which is suited for the festival. This idea came from Melle Koot, who assigned this pro- ject. Based on the concept design recommendations are made, a cost estimate is made and the idea is visualized trough a 3d model. With this, Melle Koot can approach other parties to explain the idea. The assignment is done as follows: first, the wishes and demands of the involved parties are analyzed. This is done by talking to Mello Koot and a festival organizer. After that the most appropriate Rapid Prototyping technique for the Re-printer was esta- blished. Several techniques are compared and from those Fused Deposition Modeling, also known as ‘3d printing’, was selected. Thirdly, a flow-chart was made. The flow-chart contained Re-printers neces- sary processing steps. These are input, washing, grinding, drying, extruding, 3d printing and output. With those various steps analyzed, concrete solutions for each step were researched. Various concepts emerged from this process. While choos- ing a concept, it became clear that the flow-chart had to be modified. To provide the festival visitors with more ease of use, it was decided to insert the cups in stacks. Because of this, the Re-printer had to separate the cups. Therefor, the step ‘separation’ was added. Lastly, this concept was modeled in Solidworks so that Melle Koot could present a concrete and insightful plan to financiers and other developers. Now that the Re-printer has a conceptual form and content, a rough estimate of the costs was given. Developmental costs and production costs are se- parated. By dividing the device in various particles, an estimate of the costs could be determined. The developmental costs are estimated on 300.000 euro’s and the production costs on 70.000 euro. Furthermore, recommendations and conclusions are presented. It is important to take the user into account in further development. Both festival visi- tors, producers and festival organizers. Additionally, the time needed to create one product is very long, this takes 20 to 25 minutes. 3d printing is accounta- ble for most of the time. It is likely that the speed of 3d printing will rise in the following years, however, this is a serious issue which recquires further at- tention. The conclusion to this bachelor assignment is that the idea of the Re-printer, as researched during this project, is technically feasible. Moreover, the aims for this project are reached. The idea is visualized and a cost estimate is given. However, there are some issues that require further attention. Examples are the processing time and the elaboration of the extrusion process. Many questions remain to be answered in order to elaborate this concept, but this bachelor assignment has laid a solid foundation for the idea of a Re-printer.
