Abstract:This report describes the Bachelor Assignment of Paul de Waard. It was executed on behalf of interior design company STIJLAPART. The assignment was to find a solution to the littering problem in high school Etty Hillesum Lyceum, location Het Vlier. Goal of the assignment is to reduce littering in the school by changing user behavior. How can the pupils be influenced by a product or service, to prevent them from littering? A structured literature study points out how complex the littering problem is. The effects of litter and the solutions on how to prevent littering are discussed. Research done in high school Het Vlier is based on knowledge provided by this study. During observations, the normal behavior of pupils was examined. How do they litter? Furthermore it became clear which strategies the school had applied to solve the problem. Besides Het Vlier, several other high schools were contacted and asked if they would like to share their experiences on the littering problem. How do they deal with it and are the actions taken of any use? Schools often apply the same techniques in order to solve the problem but the effects seem to vary. After research and observations, another literature study was done. This time on behavior. Explained is how behavior exactly works and where measures can be taken to change behavior. To understand how products can have impact on humans, the user-product relationship is explained. The user-product interaction is determined by the functions a product does or does not offer. How did this change over time and effect the relationship with products? The Product Impact Tool by Steven Dorrestijn shows how a product can influence its users. There are different ways of user-product interaction, which can result in a change of behavior. Products can act in a seducing, convincing and compelling way. When the research on behavior was finished, several concepts were generated. The concepts were analyzed by means of the Product Impact Tool. The seven ideas which would probably work best were optimized. Four concepts were tested by building functional prototypes. The interaction between the prototypes and the pupils was observed. A survey pointed out how pupils thought about the remaining three concepts. With the results the impact of each concept could be determined. Results show that the pupils’ behavior could be changed best with the use of ‘convincing’ and ‘seducing’ products. The compelling form of interaction caused a lot of resistance and worked counterproductive. Three of the seven concepts can be implemented in the school after some adjustments. Those concepts are: an integrated table waste bin, a tumbler bin and an additional set of lessons about littering and sustainability. These concepts convince the pupils to bin their waste properly. In cooperation with the school some of the concepts will be implemented next year. The three months working on this assignment were too short to indicate whether the concepts are a long-term solution. A follow-up research is needed to examine the effects.
