Abstract:Background: The two- continua model states that psychopathology and positive mental health are related but the relationship is not perfect. In this study the two- continua model was investigated specifically by elderly (with symptoms of depression), with a intervention and the lay-perspective of elderly and the divergence in lay-perspective because of the need for care and ages. It was interesting to investigated this because the presents of the two- continua model could be investigated this way and because new ideas for interventions and research could be developed. Methods: Study 1: 100 elderly with psychopathology participated in the course ‘The stories we life by’. The effects were measured with Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHCSF), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale –Anxiety (HADS-A). SPSS 18 was used for data analysis. Study 2: 12 participant were interviewed with a self developed open interview. The data- analyses was describing. Results: Study 1: The relationship between the continua are equal to the two- continua model. The two- continua model explains 48,7 – 66,2 % of the variance. Study 2: When asked about mental health elderly name psychopathology, positive mental health and faith. The need for care and age influenced the factors called. Elderly describe implicitly the relationships between the continua that equal those of the two- continua model. Conclusion: The two- continua model is found under elderly who participated in the course The stories we life by. There is implicit proof that the two continua model can by found in the lay-perspective of elderly. More research is needed to conform the results of this study. Finally faith needs to be included in interventions en research.
