Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate what influence ingroups and outgroups may have on antisocial and prosocial behavior of people. In this study, ingroups were seen as Dutch people and outgroups were seen as German people. The sample size was of eighty participants, and they were examined through an experiment that was followed by a questionnaire. This study involved two situations, in the first situation the actress showed antisocial behavior; whilst in the second situation she became unwell. In contrast with the expectations, the stereotype of German people can be considered as quite positive by these participants, through which the manipulation might not have had the desired influence. However, the participants felt more connected to Dutch people than to German people. Results showed that the more a person felt personal responsible, the faster a person interfered. In this study that meant that when a person interfered he or she addressed the actress on her antisocial behavior or offered help to the actress during the experiment. Furthermore, the results showed that the degree to which a person felt sympathy towards the actress did not influence the outcome of their reaction, nor did their affective state at the beginning of the experiment. Previous studies have showed that the more a person has a positive attitude towards using violence and taking risks, the faster a person proceeds to action. This relation could not be found in this study. In the situation of antisocial behavior, the ingroup showed that four out of twenty people took action and the outgroup showed two out of twenty people which took action. In the situation of helping behavior, seven people took action in the ingroup and six people took action in the outgroup. An ANOVA computation showed that there is a significant effect regarding the situation (antisocial or prosocial) on the amount of participants who interfered, the results also showed a significant effect regarding the situation (antisocial or prosocial) on the time till interference. A significant effect concerning group membership (ingroup or outgroup) on the amount of participants who interfered or on the time until interference occurred was not found. In addition, no significant interaction-effect was found on the amounts of participants who interfered or the time until the interference occurred. A significant effect was observed with regards to the situation (antisocial or prosocial) on the extent to which a participant felt him/herself personally responsible. Furthermore, there is a significant effect regarding the situation (antisocial or prosocial) on the extent to which the actress was found sympathetic. Furthermore, another effect was observed of group membership (ingroup or outgroup) on the extent to which the actress was found sympathetic.
