Abstract:People who suffer from a chronic rheumatic disease experience significant pain and limitations in their daily lives. Previous research, in chronic diseases, depression and health deterioration, has shown that people with chronic rheumatic disease often experience more intense feelings of depression than people who do not suffer from a chronic condition. In this survey study the research goal is "To what extent experienced pain and feelings of depression play a role in rheumatic diseases. Not all the rheumatic diseases have the same incidence; for this study only the most common forms of rheumatic diseases have been selected. The diseases rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, Bechterev's disease, polymyalgia rheumatica and arthritis are the most common. The six different conditions differ in the period of time of pain perception; with the disease gout the pain comes and goes during a period of time while patients with the disease rheumatoid arthritis experience constant pain. Therefore, for these six rheumatic diseases examined whether there is a difference between the conditions regarding the experience of pain and possible depression. There will also be examined which factors play a role in the experience of pain and the degree of depression. Furthermore the possible relationship between pain perception and depressive feelings will be analyzed. The results of this study have been obtained by means of a quantitative survey. The data was collected through the MOS Short-Form General Health Survey (SF-36, version 2). A validated Dutch translation of the questionnaire was used. The SF-36 consists of 36 items, divided into eight dimensions: physical functioning, social functioning, role limitations (physical), role limitations (emotional), mental health, vitality, bodily pain and general health (Van der Zee & Sanderman, 1993). At the ReumaCentrum Twente of the Medisch Spectrum Twente, respondents have been approached. The data from 1075 respondents were used for this study. The perception of the respondents experienced pain for the six different conditions is different. The degree of depressive feelings are for patients with the six different conditions about the same. Other factors play a role in the perception of pain experienced, the age of the respondent and the extent to which the respondent is physical active. For the depression is that the age, disease duration, physical and social functioning play a role in the degree of depression. There appears to be no strong relationship between the experience of pain perception and depression of the respondents for the various disorders. It can be concluded that both pain and depression play a role in the chronic rheumatic diseases. There just seems to be no significant correlation between the degree of pain and depressive feelings of the respondent.
