Abstract:Goal: By ageing are increasingly elderly depending on care and there are fewer young people to care for them. In addition there is by the cuts less time for the care of a resident. This may affect communication between caretakers and residents. This communication is found important in support of basic needs. In this study is being investigated which behaviors support the psychological basic needs autonomy and connectedness of the self determination theory of Ryan and Deci (2001, 2002). Method: There are three video-recordings analyzed of different caretakers with the same resident during the provision of the morning care. From these three recordings, nine fragments are chosen, whose support of the needs autonomy and connectedness is observed. These fragments are first transcribed. Then they are actually described, interpreted and there is a link created with the literature. Results: In support of autonomy are found multiple behaviors, namely let the resident know what is going to happen by name the care tasks or with non-verbal communication, to give the residents choices, let the resident run tasks itself or promote the independence of the resident, ask the opinion/wishes of the resident, give the resident freedom to indicate his/her needs and wait patiently when a resident does tasks. The resident can also decide what his/her needs are or take the initiative to complete a task. In support of connectedness is considered verbal interaction: small talk, make a joke (laughing with the resident), talking about topics of interest to the resident, create togetherness by associate with the resident and not to impose the own opinion. If non-verbal interaction: make eye contact with the resident. A resident can also make eye contact, make jokes and start a conversation about what is important to him/her. Conclusion and discussion: The findings in this study were in line with the literature. However, there are new behaviors found that support autonomy and connectedness. For follow-up research it could be useful to make autonomy and connectedness quantifiable. Also, a larger group of respondents, video material of different moments and nursing homes and investigate the same caregiver with several residents, is advisable. Recommendations for practice are viewing video-recordings with caregivers and communication training for caregivers. In addition, this research may have value for other areas, such as sport, care of the disabled and education.
