Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this research was to gain more insight in the functioning of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This therapy has shown to be helpful in reducing mild to moderate psychological problems. But so far little is known about how ACT exactly works. Background: This research is a pilot study (N=50) of the investigation by Fledderus, Bohlmeijer, Pieterse and Schreurs (2012). To gain more insight in the functioning of ACT, the concept of agency was used. Agency is similar to the main purpose of ACT – psychological flexibility. For the measurement of agency a coding system was developed. Method: Participants with mild to moderate depressive symptoms (measured by CES-D) worked through the self-help book “Living to the full” for nine consecutive weeks . During this process they were given e-mail support by a therapist. Subsequently the e-mails were coded on agency. An increase of agency and a correlation of increase of agency and decrease of psychological problems were expected. Results: While a significantdecrease in depressive symptoms was found (p<.05), a significant increase of agency could not be shown. Neither could a correlation of psychological troubles and agency be found. Conclusion: For further research a larger sample size and modifications of the coding system are recommended. Moreover a follow-up measurement of agency could be informative.
