Abstract:Background: Physical functioning is an important domain of gout research. The recommended test for research on physical functioning is the HAQ. The HAQ was actually developed for research on the health status of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and has problems with the special pathology of gout. The objective of this research is to find out, what are the most common physical limitations that gout patients have in their daily life. A distinction is made between three different distinctions of gout. Physical limitations during a gout attack, physical limitations between the attacks and physical limitations in the course of time. Participants and Method: The patients were recruited at the department of rheumatology and clinical immunology at the Medical Spectrum Twente. Seven male gout patients participated in the study. The qualitative research consisted of a semi- structured interview. Activities from three chapters of the ICF were used in the interview questions. The interview data was encoded for a better understanding of it. Results: Patients had problems with physical activities when they had a gout attack. Between attacks, they had little or no physical problems from gout. It was also not possible to determine changes in the patient’s physical functioning in the course of time. Activities from the ICF- chapter mobility were mostly affected by gout. Patients indicated that red meat and beer were the most important triggers of gout attacks. Conclusion: As a result of the good treatment and the short duration of the sickness it has been shown that patients were mainly suffering from pain in the big toe during a gout attack. This had influence on activities which needed the usage of feet, for example running, cycling or working at home. It seemed that only long term patients suffer from gout between attacks.
