Abstract:This research focuses on the application and performance of risk management within Roelofs Wegenbouw and Roelofs Advies en Ontwerp, a company in the Dutch civil engineering industry. The company uses risk management within infrastructure projects, however, they are looking for ways to improve the implementation of risk management. In order to gain insight into the level of risk management the organization is applying, first an exploratory study on the application of risk management was conducted. Several internal project and process documents were reviewed. Furthermore interviews have been conducted with persons from various positions within the organization. The organization uses the RISMAN method, which has been developed by Van Well-Stam et al (2003). The review of the process documents revealed that risks are identified during the first phase of a project. However, the actual application differs from the RISMAN method. Based on this study, three design and construct projects were selected of which the performance of risk management was reviewed. These projects are from different time periods; 2009 - 2010, 2011 - 2012 and 2011 - 2013 (expected). The Project Risk Maturity Model (PRMM) of Hopkinson (2011) was used to measure the performance. The PRMM assesses the level of risk maturity by 50 questions that yield scores in six perspectives, namely Stakeholder, Risk Identification, Risk Analysis, Risk Responses, Project Management and Culture. This score ranges from level 1 (0-25%) to level 4 (75-100%). A full process audit was used to answer the PRMM questions, based on the project documentation. In order to verify this information, interviews were conducted with project team members. The final scoring was discussed with one of the project team members to ensure that all comments and assumptions are correct. In addition to individual projects an organization wide survey based on the questions of the PRMM was held. This survey was used to compare the scoring of the projects with the overall score. The score determination of the survey was matched to that of the PRMM. This way, the score of projects and the survey can be compared unambiguously. The scores show that in the course of time the projects performed better. A remark should be made that the 3rd project has a somewhat distorted picture because the client requested additional information and evidence throughout the project, which resulted in a higher scoring. When comparing the scores of both the projects and the survey, it shows that first of all the perspectives risk analysis and project management are susceptible for improvement
