| Abstract: | In the Netherlands the term ‘lover boys’ refers to a kind of human trafficking. Characteristic for lover boys is that they are making women and/or men deliberately emotionally dependent by (the promise of) entering into a love affair. When this has happened, the women and/or men are being exploited, often in the prostitution. Recent research has shown that lover boys nowadays are using the Internet as an aid: it makes the search for victims easier. This research is focusing on three things: the websites which play a role with the victim selection by lover boys on the Internet, the profiles from victims on websites and the results and experiences with the pilot ‘Lover boys 2.0’. The results show that it is very difficult to map the websites which play a role with the victim selection by lover boys: they are changing from time to time. The most frequently mentioned websites in this research are: Hyves, Facebook, Tagged and Chatrooms. It is remarkable that more than half of the respondents told that the contact between victim and lover boy shifts very fast to the mobile Internet: BlackBerry Messenger and WhatsApp. The results also show that having a picture, especially a provocative picture, posting contact details, especially the BlackBerry PIN, and posting the hobbies/preferences have an effect on the victim selection by lover boys on the Internet. Finally, the results revealed that it is very difficult, maybe even impossible, to intervene in advance at lover boy issues. But this does not mean that this applies to all kinds of crime; in the pilot there were results with catching pedophiles. It is also important to mention that half of the respondents said that the media is making a hype out of lover boys. |
