Abstract:Introduction Osteoarthritis (OA) is a worldwide common disorder in which patients experience, besides having pain complaints, mostly symptoms of fatigue. The current study aims to develop a further insight into the experience of OA-fatigue. The current study focuses on the course of OA-fatigue. Methods The number of participants of the current research is 12. It is a heterogeneous sample of 11 female participants and 1 male, with mean illness duration of 11 years. The mean age of patients is 68. These patients have been brought in by means of a regional general practitioner in Almelo, at the Medisch Spectrum Twente and on the symposium of Check Enschede. Semi structured interviews have been used. For the analysis a combination of top down and bottom-up coding scheme has been used. First of all the interview fragments have been subdivided into topics. After categorization, by means of axial coding the focus was laid on these topics separately with the aim of summarizing these topics into bigger categories. Results The current study shows that there is a large variance in how OA fatigue is experienced. A majority of the patients have learned to deal with fatigue through experiences. Some patients are better able to deal with fatigue through experiences. Other patients experienced no worsening of dealing with OA fatigue. Over the years, majority of patients show an increase of fatigue. Finally, the development of fatigue seems to go together with the development of pain and loss of function. Discussion Results of the current study indicate that OA fatigue is expressed differently by patients. Over the course of OA, patients seem to experience an increase in fatigue. Some questions from the interview have a low validity and were found difficult by a large number of patients. This makes it difficult to make certain statements about the findings of this research. From available literature, it becomes clear that there are no other attempts to describe the course of complaints other than prospective longitudinal research for example with self reported questionnaires. For future research, a longitudinal prospective research will be better suited to describe the course of OA fatigue.
