Abstract:In the Netherlands the English word ‘loverboys’ describes pimps who use their seductive skills to exploit young girls as prostitutes. The digital loverboy is a fairly new concept and refers to the recruitment and exploitation of girls over the internet. In this study, an inventory of both scientific and gray literature on the digital loverboy is made. The literature was collected in a systematic manner and shows that there appear to be typical offender and victim profiles, but also the sexualization on the internet and the desire to become popular on social networking sites is important. The methods used by the digital loverboy is divided into grooming-, habituation- and exploitation phases, and the loverboys tend to work together in criminal organizations. The internet offers many advantages to the loverboy, but can also be used as detection- or prevention tool. Where the literature remains strictly descriptive this study applies theories to the victim phases, as well as to the social environment and individual considerations of the loverboy. On the victimization process the Social Bond Theory, the SPF-theory, the theory of Psychological Entrapment and Learned Helplessness and the model of Crime-Victim Decision Making are applied. In the case of the loverboy the Subculture Theory, the Social Bond Theory, the Differential Association Theory, the Opportunity Theory and the Rational Choice Theory are used. The theories provide a new insight on the loverboy issue and can possibly contribute to address these. In addition, a theoretical background can give the topic of loverboys a better position in the world of science. Important implications are the need for certain information to victims, prevention from inside the subculture of the perpetrators and an increase of the risks and costs for the loverboys. Some comments and recommendations will be mentioned.
