Abstract:Background There is a lot of attention for the perinatal care these days. This is because the high perinatal mortality rate in the Netherlands, and because of the slow decrease of this mortality (Bonsel et al., 2010), (Mohangoo, Buitendijk et al. 2008) (Achterberg 2005). eHealth is used more and more in order to improve the quality of the health care. eHealth means the use of information technology and communication technology in health care (Mol, de Jonge et al. 2010). eHealth seems to be promising: to improve the quality of the health care, but also to ensure the costs of the health care (Sorbi and Riper 2009). Research shows a low impact of the use of eHealth, for improving the quality of health care. The effect of technology is barely shown (Black, Car et al. 2011). A methodology, called the ‘CeHReS roadmap’, has been developed as a solution. This methodology helps to design better eHealth technologies (van Gemert-Pijnen, Nijland et al. 2011). For this research, two steps of this methodology has been used, called ‘contextual inquiry’ and ‘value specification’. Methods Literature research has been used to identify the problem. It is also been used to determine the factors affecting the problem, and to determine the solutions that are currently used and have been examined. Desk research has been used to determine which solutions are currently used with respect to the problems in the perinatal care, and the factors affecting these problems. Also qualitative interviews have been used to determine whether the stakeholders recognized themselves in the problems and the solutions and to determine which values they attributed to eHealth solutions. Results Diverse factors affect the high perinatal mortality rate, which in many cases are related to risk selection in the perinatal care. Most important problems in risk selection were: not properly recognizing the risks and BIG4 symptoms, and sometimes late and inadequate communication. Diverse technological solutions have been found, which were known and recognized by the stakeholders. These solutions are: a Perinatal Webbased Dossier (PWD), an online questionnaire and an online health care portal. Conclusion A number of technological solutions, a Perinatal Webbased Dossier, Online questionnaire and an online health care portal, are able to reduce the perinatal mortality care, in the Netherlands. Further research is necessary to determine how and in which extend the quality of the perinatal care can be improved by this solutions.
