Abstract:Background: The surgical care is a highly complex environment that includes risks for patients. For this kind of tasks different disciplines are needed. To provide safe care, working as a team is of great importance. To be able to reduce dysfunction and resultant errors to ensure patient safety learning within surgical care teams is required. Which characteristics surgical care teams should have to be able to learn was so far not been described. Furthermore, it was unclear what factors affect the learning of surgical teams. Aim: Purpose of this review is to identify and describe characteristics and influencing factors of learning teams in surgical care. A further purpose is to make proposals for effectively team training within surgical care. Method: A literature search was conducted, for which the database Scopus, PsycINFO, PubMed and Web of Knowledge were searched. The keywords surgery care, team learning, team work, surgery training, improvement and non-technical skills were used separately and in combination. Results: Ten qualitative studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this study. Based on this study, the following characteristics were identified and described: communication, "boundary spanning", situational awareness, shared responsibility, knowledge of the different professional roles and work processes, availability of implicit and explicit knowledge, confidence, and coordination. Moreover, a series of influencing factors to be named, such as leadership, sense of belonging, workload and stress, hierarchy, "hand off" and transition, inclusive atmosphere and psychological safety, organizational culture, teamstability, and organization of the work. Conclusion: Communication, situational awareness and the availability of explicit and implicit knowledge appeared to be the main characteristics. Psychological safety and good organization of work seems to positively impact learning within these teams. To maintain and promote learning within the surgical care, team training should to be focused on these characteristics and factors.
