Abstract:For companies it is increasingly important to pursue political avenues. But also for politicians it is important that companies respond to the demands of the government, the politicians and of the society as a whole. According to literature Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) could be used by companies to get more awareness, attention and support of politicians (Hillman, Keim & Schuler, 2004; Bonardi & Keim, 2005). The research, described in this report, focuses on the relation between CSR and Public Affairs (PA) as it investigates the possibilities of Corporate Social Responsibility to influence the behaviour of politicians. Is it possible to influence the political agenda or should CSR mainly be used to build up relations with politicians and to create goodwill, like described in the literature? The main question of the research is the following: - Can CSR be used to induce the supportive behaviour of politicians? The results are obtained by conducting semi-structured interviews. In total 17 regional politicians (Twente region) have participated in this research. The results show that CSR can only contribute to the Public Affairs process when projects have an added value for politicians. The organizations are than able to be more visible for their environment and to attract more attention and awareness of politicians. Besides that companies will not immediately benefit of their CSR activities. CSR activities have to be carried out over a long period before companies see certain results, like the changement of the behaviour of politicians. Furthermore CSR is especially useful to build up the image of a company, to build up relationships with politicians and to create goodwill. By building up relationships and creating goodwill companies could than indirectly influence certain behaviours of politicians.
